Disney World Outfits for Plus Size Moms
"What do I wear to Disneyland?" Is the most popular question I get on Instagram after posting from a day in the park. Usually, there's more to it like:
- "My thighs rub together when I walk and shorts are out of the question."
- "I refuse to wear leggings but still want the freedom to move around"
- "I want to wear a dress but don't have shoes that are comfortable and match."
Girl, I got you. After 7 years of being an Disneyland Annual Passholder I've tried a variety of outfits for my Disneyland trips. From skirts, to dresses, shorts, and leggings…I've got the recipe to help you figure out what to wear to Disneyland.
Tips for What to Wear to Disneyland when you are Curvy
- Prioritize your worst pain – what's worst? Blisters? Chafing? Back aches? Dress for it.
- Wear layers – Prepare to be hot all day and cold at night.
- Bring a bag that allows you to roam hands-free.
Being a plus size curvy adventurer comes with some challenges. Body parts rub together more, we have more mass to move around so we sweat, we get hot and sometimes we need a break. That's why, dressing for comfort is THE single most important thing you can do when planning your Disneyland outfit.
My biggest tip is to prioritize the worst pain you can endure. Disneyland trips are easily 10-12 hour days of standing, walking, squeezing through turnstyles and more. If your biggest pain is thigh chafing, don't try for shorts. If you are worried about blisters, don't wear stiff shoes. Wear these shoes instead.
We all want to look cute when we are at theme parks like Disney, but don't let it overrule your common sense.
Wearing leggings to Disneyland
Leggings are my go-to bottoms for Disneyland. Picking what to wear to Disneyland is tough, but if you want a fail safe go with leggings. Leggings are breathable, flexible, and stretchy so you can fully enjoy the Disney magic without getting swamp butt.
I know there are still people out there that think leggings shouldn't be worn as pants, if that's you, scroll down to my second and third options.
Personally, I would die for the statement "leggings are pants." Women of all sizes can and should embrace leggings. There are several companies that make opaque leggings that are not see through.
Some of my favorite legging brands include:
I prioritize having a good time, over everything else when I am at Disneyland. Don't worry about the haters. There will always be people that say "you can't wear leggings if you weigh more than XX lbs" or "you need to wear tunics over leggings." False, wear what makes you feel comfortable.
Though, if leggings make you self conscious don't wear them. You will spend all day wondering if people are staring at you, and honestly that's no fun.
The leggings in this photo are the Felina Womens Velvety Soft Lightweight Leggings. Size: XLarge. My mom bought me these for Christmas saying they were the softest leggings she has ever owned. Comparing them to my Banana Republic leggings, these take the cake! In fact I save them for Saturday and Mondays so that I can be at my comfiest. Why Saturdays? Because I like to start my weekends out right. Why Mondays? Because it's the worst day of the week and soft leggings make it that much better.
They are sold at Costco too if you prefer to physically see them and touch them.
You can also try your hand at wearing shorts or a dress to Disneyland. If you go that route, there are extra precautions you should take to stay comfortable.
How to wear shorts to Disneyland
The age old question: Can I wear shorts to Disneyland? The answer is Yes. If you are ready to take a few extra steps to avoid chafing. Southern California is hot in the summer. As a plus size woman, I sweat. I sweat a lot. When Disneyland is hot, I will opt to wear shorts and let my legs breathe.
"What about my cellulite?" No one cares. Most of the families at Disneyland are more concerned with their child getting lost or snagging fast passes. Don't let the fear of judgement from fellow Disneyland goers keep you for having fun. We all have cellulite and it's nothing to be ashamed of.
If you are not prone to thigh chafing, then wear shorts! Always prioritize your comfort. This allows you to fully enjoy the trip.

Wearing a dress to Disneyland
Curvy women can wear dresses to Disneyland too. In fact it's a lot more comfortable to wear a dress to Disneyland than it is to wear shorts. You get all of the breeziness of shorts and the stretchiness and comfort of leggings.
It's not surprise that my favorite types of dresses are t-shirt dresses. I have about five or 6 different t-shirt dresses because they pair very well with tennis shoes. When I go to Disneyland you will often find I am wearing my favorite travel shoe. My travel shoes have a soft sole and decent arch support so I can wear them for 12-16 hours without aching or tired feet.
Southern California has weather pretty similar to desert weather. It can be as hot as 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and as cold as 40 or 50 at night. Wearing a dress to Disneyland means you have to take two extra precautions:
- Protection from thigh chafing
- Layering for warmth
Consider the weather in Anaheim before choosing what to wear to Disneyland or California Adventure.
My favorite t-shirt dresses:
Layering at Disneyland
I prefer to go to Disneyland with a backpack. Yes, backpacks get clunky and the cast members make you remove it getting in and out of rides, but they do help you save money when at the park.
You can easily pack your layers in your backpack when picking at outit for Disneyland. Because it can be 90 degrees during the day, you want to be able to avoid sweating as much as possible. Who hates sweaty boobs?? I do!
By evening, you can guarantee the sun will go down and the goosebumps will start to show. Especially if you are doing a water ride like Splash Mountain, you'll want to bring a sweater to wear later.
I'll often bring a light hoodie and a jacket with me during spring and fall. The only time it gets really cold is during winter, in which a north face and a scarf will do you some good.
Must-have layering items:
- Lite hoodie
- Jacket (denim, leather etc)
- Scarf
Some people actually like buying the merchandise while at the park. I know I do. But it can easily rack up fast. I have a theory that Disney keeps the A/C on full blast even in winter and at night just to get us to buy their hoodies and jackets.
The Disneyland Spirit Jerseys are my favorite shirts they sell right now.

No matter what you pick, I hope you leave this blog post with this: your comfort comes first.
As a curvy plus size Disney lover who has visited the park more than 100 times in the past few years, I can say no one is judging you. Even if you do see someone glance at you funny, shake it off. Focus on enjoying your trip and making memories!
